Southern California is an attractive vacation destination due to its year-round sunshine, tall palm trees, and sandy beaches. One popular destination within this region is Malibu, which is well-known for its beach culture, fresh seafood and surfing opportunities. However, Malibu is also home to some of the best hiking trails in Southern California. These trails include a route to an old M.A.S.H filming location in the Malibu Creek State Park, trails with views of the Pacific Ocean, and beautiful waterfall hikes. Here are some of our recommended spots to try with family and friends!
Escondido Falls trail (Location: Escondido Canyon Park)
This is one of the best known hikes in Malibu, and it can take you to a breathtaking waterfall, depending on the season. If you visit during the summer, it's possible that the falls will have dried up. To get the most out of this hike, it is recommended to start early in the morning. Not only will you avoid crowds and the hot weather, but you'll also have a better chance of finding a free parking spot, which tend to fill up by noon.
2. Temescal Canyon Trail (Location: Topanga State Park)
One of the best hikes in Topanga State Park, this hike is generally considered to be of moderate difficulty, although it may present some challenges at times. The Temescal Canyon Trail offers breathtaking views of the ocean, as well as panoramic vistas of Malibu, Santa Monica, and Los Angeles. Along the way, you may also encounter waterfalls and a colorful array of wildflowers, depending on the time of year.
3. Solstice Canyon Loop (Location: Malibu)
This 3.0-mile loop trail near Malibu, California is a popular destination for hikers. With an average completion time of 1 hour and 34 minutes, it is considered to be a moderately challenging route. The trail is open all year round and is suitable for dogs, as long as they are kept on a leash.
